Newtonmore Golf Club – Nature’s Own Amphitheatre

Tee off in a spectacular natural amphitheatre alongside the River Spey within the Cairngorms National Park.

Our expansive green fairways sweep across the contoured flood plains with majestic mountain views, just off of the main street of the village of Newtonmore (the B9150). We’re almost in the geographical centre of Scotland – one of the top attractions in this popular Highland holiday spot to the south of Aviemore.

Founded in 1893 Newtonmore Golf Club, with its impeccably kept course, is beloved by locals and consistently thrills visitors who discover its charms and challenges for the first time.

The course was originally designed with nine holes. In 1896 legendary St Andrews golf professional and triple winner of early Open titles, Tom Morris, declared Newtonmore was one of the best inland courses he had played. He took a keen interest in the Club and tweaked the layout a little. Over the following years other golfing professionals improved and extended the course, which was finally lengthened to 18 holes in 1906.

A year later renowned course designer James Braid won a match on the course, described it as “excellent” and eventually added his own personal touches to the course design.

With such a pedigree, Newtonmore Golf Club now offers a golfing experience par excellence in an unparalleled setting.

A Highlight of Highland Golfing

Newtonmore’s original clubhouse was designed by local architect Alexander Macpherson. It opened in 1904 after being built at a cost of £143. It was then proudly described as “a handsome and commodious building, 37 feet long by about 18 feet wide, with an ornamental veranda”.

Over the years since the clubhouse has undergone various extensions, improvements and refurbishments and remains the hospitable heart of Newtonmore Golf Club. It wasn’t until 1956 that a liquor licence was obtained and a bar was opened.

Records show that in 1929 the green fees for visitors were 2/6d (about 12.5p in today’s money), or you could pay 8 shillings (40p) for the week. The busy, popular course was staffed with up to 50 young lads under 15 to act as caddies during the height of the season. They earned 6d (2.5p) a round.

For well over 130 years Newtonmore Golf Club has been building up an enthusiastic fan club and “not to be missed” reputation. Today it draws golfing enthusiasts from across Scotland, the UK and the world who return time and again to play this exceptional course in the Cairngorms.
